Hemp cloth to cover the bamboo and wood structure. Will be coated in super sap natural resin to form a sustainable composite body. The small twine is for joining the frame pieces prior to resin coating. The 3/8” hemp rope is for the seat/hammock, and for door limiting straps.

Rather than use chains, which are noisy and wear out quickly, The trike will be all belt drive, using used timing belts from salvaged cars. These should last indefinitely due to the low speed and the fact that they’re completely enclosed in the design. Machining these will be the most difficult part of this particular build. Regular chain and sprockets can be substituted to save lots of time and money, at the expense of noise and more maintenance.

Since this project started in Colorado, halfway up a mountain, the solar system needed some backup. This is a 10kw generator head, mounted where the air conditioning compressor used to go, and electronically governed and controlled by a box in the shop.

My first cnc machine. It was really neat but too small to do anything quickly. I was also fighting corporate software and crappy inverters at the time so prototyping on it was a real headache. If you’re doing jewelry, I’d recommend the MicroProto DSLS3000, but for bigger stuff, the DIY build your own route is definitely the best way to go.

It was a little cramped, but with enough patience, I could build nearly anything in there. The new shop will be a little smaller but hopefully, more capable due to the larger multi function DIY CNC. I definitely miss my Grizzly G0516 manual mill/lathe combo though!
